Historical Society renovating facility

NEWPORT – The Newport Historical Society has started work on its project to renovate its facility at 82 Touro St.
A new driveway, entrance and elevator will make the building more accessible. Inside, modern collections storage and a research facility will be provided. The plan preserves most of the property’s greenspace and both mature trees.
The project cost is just under $3 million and is expected to be complete some time in 2015.
NewPort Architecture LLC has designed the addition and renovation, while Farrar & Associates are construction managers.
Working with the society staff, the team will focus on the exterior work this fall, and move inside the building next year.
Some of the additional improvements include watertight integrity to the entire building, new electrical, plumbing and environmentally efficient HVAC systems, renovated collections storage, research and work spaces, as well as new parking and restrooms.
The improvements will help preserve the historical society as “a modern, highly functioning institution,” said Executive Director Ruth Taylor. “Collections will be properly stored and protected, and the building will function effectively for researchers, visitors and staff.”
The nonprofit is actively raising money for these improvements, she said.
