Bill Bohmbach, founder and president of Portsmouth-based Home Healthsmith, recently earned the National Association of Home Builders’ certified aging-in-place specialist designation. Bohmbach has more than 30 years of experience in adaptive-mobility equipment and previously served in the Navy as an electrician. He founded Accurate Elevator and Lift in 1994, which he sold in 2010 to a major international elevator company. Bohmbach is currently pursuing his certification for home modifications through the University of Southern California.
PBN: What led you to pursue the certified aging-in-place specialist designation?
BOHMBACH: A desire to increase my knowledge and understanding of how my company could further assist those who want to safely age in place is what prompted me to enroll in the program.
It teaches the technical, business management and customer-service skills essential to compete in the fastest-growing segment of the residential remodeling industry: home modifications for the aging-in-place. Today’s seniors want to remain in their own homes as long as possible. With one in every eight people in America considered “older,” there are plenty of people we can help.
PBN: How will it help you?
BOHMBACH: Home Healthsmith offers a complete solution to ensure a home functions in a way that reflects the occupants’ changing needs to preserve their independence. Now that I have completed the CAPS program, I have even more strategies and techniques available to help design aesthetically pleasing, barrier-free living environments for our aging population as well as many facing other physical challenges. Linda (my wife and business partner) and I have a personal concern for the people we serve.
PBN: What’s rewarding about your work?
BOHMBACH: During that time I have watched our population age and seen huge design improvements in what is available to help them live in place longer. Our clients constantly tell us how pleased they are with how the stairlift or ramp we installed, or the wheelchair or scooter we repaired has made their life more easeful and enjoyable. Knowing [how] our services provide tangible benefits for our clients is what I find rewarding. •
