PROVIDENCE – Providence Community Health Centers has named Dr. Melinda Hooton its medical director, a new position for the nonprofit agency.

“We’re very excited to welcome Dr. Hooton to Providence Community Health Centers,” Merrill Thomas, president and CEO, said in a statement. “She brings a great blend of clinical education and expertise, strong leadership and management savvy and a passion for community-based patient care.”

Hooton earned her medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed her internship and residency at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. After an extensive career in community-based primary care programs in California and Boston, Hooton returned to Rhode Island, where she most recently served as medical director at Rhode Island Hospital Center for Primary Care.

“I look forward to providing physician leadership and working with the exceptional team that exists at PCHC as we evolve in the current health care climate,” Hooton said in a statement. “I am fortunate to have this opportunity … to advocate for both the 50,000 PCHC patients and for the health care teams at PCHC to ensure the delivery of high-value medical care.”

Hooton added, “I’m also excited about growing the team at PCHC. Team-based care is a cornerstone of community health center careers, and those who enjoy multidisciplinary collaboration will find PCHC to be a rewarding opportunity.”
