PROVIDENCE – Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island began in 1976, when a dedicated group of volunteers – health care professionals and community members – envisioned a better, more compassionate approach to end-of-life care in Rhode Island. Hope Hospice RI is the nation’s second-oldest hospice.

The major teaching affiliate for hospice and palliative care medicine for Brown University’s Warren Alpert School of Medicine, Hope Hospice RI recently expanded into the Massachusetts’ market through its affiliation with HopeHealth in Massachusetts. Hope Hospice RI’s physicians, nurses, social workers, hospice aides, chaplains, grief counselors and more than 350 volunteers care for nearly 5,500 patients each year, according to a Hope Hospice RI statement.

“We are deeply committed to our mission of providing outstanding, high quality care for our seriously ill patients and their families for the past 40 years,” Diana Franchitto, Hope Hospice RI president & CEO, said in a statement. “It is an honor to be able to help people live with as much comfort and dignity as possible when time matters most.”

To celebrate its landmark anniversary, Hope Hospice RI held a picnic for its staff and volunteers and, more recently, an Oct. 29 gala, “An Evening of Hope & Hospitality,” at the Providence Marriott Downtown.
