MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – The Providence Housing Authority has been awarded a federal fire safety grant to purchase fire safety technology from Pioneering Technology, the Canadian company announced Tuesday.
The $301,514 Fire Prevention and Safety grant will help PHA purchase and install the Safe T Element device, which helps prevent stovetop cooking fires, in 721 housing units.
“This is a smart investment in fire prevention and public safety,” said U.S. Sen. Jack Reed in a statement. “These federal awards will help protect families and ensure our firefighters have the equipment they need to stay safe and save lives. I salute the fire safety officials who worked hard to win these competitive grants and will continue working at the federal level to support our firefighters and first responders.”
The grant program is aimed at preventing fire-related death and injury among high-risk groups. In addition, the company noted in a release that continual fires set off smoke alarms, causing the fire department to respond, a process that costs the fire department time and money and increases PHA’s insurance premiums.
