PROVIDENCE – The Interstate 195 Redevelopment District Commission on Monday will take the unusual step of holding an initial public discussion of development of district property, in this case the proposed PawSox AAA baseball stadium.
The meeting Monday afternoon is expected to include a presentation of the stadium proposal by PawSox owners. Initially, the agenda for that meeting made no reference specifically to the presentation. Instead, as is the practice of the I-195 commission, the commission members would have held the presentation about the land development prospect in closed session.
On Friday, the I-195 commission agreed to open the meeting to the public, citing intense public interest in the matter.
“Recognizing the high level of public interest in the proposal for a stadium on 195 land, and in consultation with the PawSox owners, the 195 Commission has decided to hold in open session its Monday meeting for a presentation on the proposal,” wrote Kirby Dwyer, a spokesman for the commission.
Earlier this month, the PawSox owners, led by attorney James J. Skeffington, presented plans for a state-of-the-art ballpark on a site overlooking the Providence River. The group is seeking city and state tax incentives over 30 years. Consultants hired by the team owners project the proposed ballpark could generate an estimated $12.3 million annually “in direct spending for the city and state.” The state would receive $2 million in recurring tax revenue each year, according to the study, and Providence would receive about $170,000 in annual incremental tax revenue.
