The IYRS School of Technology & Trades is significantly expanding its programming and campus in Newport with the addition of a 20,000-square-foot facility to house its School of Composites Technology and School of Marine Systems. The new facility, designed by Wilson Architects, is adjacent to the original campus buildings that date to the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is designed to withstand flooding and issues related to sea-level rise, with an interior design that marries the history of the IYRS with a technology-based, hands-on model of education. In early 2016, the school kicked off a $12 million fundraising campaign for the new facility, aided by R.I. Commerce Corp.’s issuance of $8.1 million in state Economic Development Revenue Bonds. Work began in February 2015 and is expected to be completed in July 2017. Farrar Associates is the construction manager, with Thompson Consultants Inc., Odeh Engineers Inc. and DiPrete Engineering Associates Inc. serving as project engineers.
