NEWPORT – The International Yacht Restoration School’s raised $700,000 at its 15th annual Summer Gala on July 7 for the school’s educational programs.
“We were focusing on what our school and students have achieved [this year]. The folks who came to the Gala make it happen,” said Susan Daly, vice president of marketing.
Themed “Mastering the Craft: Celebrating 15 Years of Excellence,” the gala on IYRS’ Newport campus drew 480 attendees. The event included a short film produced by Pam Rorke Levy, event co-chair, that featured student testimony on the value of an IYRS education and the opportunities training there opened for them.
Activities for guests who stayed in Newport over the weekend included day sails aboard historic vessels and a talk and demonstration at the restoration site of the “Coronet.”
The event also marked a change in leadership at IYRS. At the Board of Trustees annual meeting on July 6, Joe Dockery of Greenwich, Conn., was elected chairman replacing Dooie Isdale who has served on the board for over a decade including five years as chairman.
Under Isdale’s leadership IYRS completed the restoration of the Newport campus and merged into the Museum of Yachting.
