EAST PROVIDENCE – The first patient has been enrolled in a bone-stabilization technology trial, performed by IlluminOss Medical, focused on impending and pathologic fractures in the humerus due to metastatic carcinoma.

IlluminOss’s minimally invasive technology uses a light-curable polymer within an expandable balloon catheter to achieve bone stabilization.

Dr. Reinhard Windhager will oversee the trial in Vienna, Austria, and the trial, with a total of as many as 45 patients, will also be conducted at nine other locations in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands.

“The IlluminOss System will potentially allow orthopedic surgeons to approach impending and actual fractures resulting from metastatic malignancy in a groundbreaking way that will benefit both the surgeon and the patient,” said Windhager.
