PAWTUCKET – International Packaging Corp. has purchased 121-year old North Attleboro-based box-maker Mason Box Co. and plans to move that company’s operations to International Packaging’s Pawtucket plant.
Founded in 1891 to make jewelry boxes, Mason Box now makes a variety of packaging for items including jewelry, candy and medical devices. It is one of the oldest jewelry-related companies remaining in the Attleboro area.
International Packaging plans to keep the Mason Box brand going and take advantage of its position in the box-making industry.
“We purchased them because they have a strong reputation in the marketplace and have some new and complementary markets that give us opportunities to grow,” said International Packaging President John Kilmartin Wednesday.
“It expands our current capabilities with added equipment and opens up some markets that were are not well-positioned in,” he continued.
Mason Box currently employs 45 people in North Attleboro and many of them will be moving to International Packaging’s Mineral Spring Avenue plant, Kilmartin said. There will be some retirements and the exact number of workers coming to Pawtucket has not been set, he added.
International Packaging, known as Interpak, currently employs 350 people, all in Pawtucket.
The transition of equipment and employees from North Attleboro to Pawtucket, including the reconfiguration of some departments within the Interpak facility, is underway and is expected to take “a few months,” according to Kilmartin.
Kilmartin said Interpak did not purchase Mason Box’s current North Attleboro facility and he does not know what will happen to that building.
