PROVIDENCE – A College of Health & Wellness has been created at Johnson & Wales University, which will include a health science major as well as the master of science program in physician assistant studies first offered in 2014, the school announced Wednesday.

The dean of the college will be George Bottomley, whose career includes academic and clinical internal, pediatric and women’s medical experience. A native Rhode Islander, he was the founder of the 2014 JWU physician assistant master’s program and serves as the program’s director.

Mim Runey, JWU Providence campus president, said the expansion of the school’s academic programming will lead to a broader student base.

She added: “This academic expansion is another step forward to ensure that a Johnson & Wales education remains relevant to market demand and employer needs.”

JWU bachelor of science students will now have a choice of three areas of study: health promotion, health management and health science. However, every student will be required to take healthy cooking classes to learn real-life applications of what they are learning in nutrition and physiology courses.

In the future, JWU plans to augment the College of Health and Wellness’ offerings to include an accredited bachelor of science degree in dietetics, the study of a person’s diet and its impact on their overall health.
