JWU to add women’s golf as varsity sport

PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University will add women’s golf as its 23rd varsity athletic sport in September, according to Associate Dean of Athletics Mary Graf.
“Last year, we expanded our women’s athletic program by adding field hockey and lacrosse,” said Graf. “Later this year we will add ice hockey and golf, providing more variety in the sports that we offer. The fastest-growing segment of women golfers are those between the ages of 18 and 29, representing almost one-quarter of all female golfers.”
Marie Bernardo-Sousa, JWU senior vice president of administration, said the sport teaches teamwork skills, working under a set system and the exchange of ideas and information within the team.
Lou Parente, currently in his ninth year as JWU’s men’s golf coach, will be the head coach of both the men’s and women’s golf teams. •
