January Geek dinner to feature Accessibility Now

Posted 1/22/14

PROVIDENCE – For this month’s meetup, the Providence Geeks will host Accessibility Now, an alumnus of the Betaspring startup accelerator that has built a Web-based scanning service to identify potential violations of Internet accessibility standards by any corporate or governmental website subject to the standards.

The company began in 2001 as an advocacy group of Internet programmers called the Bureau of Internet Accessibility, who saw demand for a resource to support the Internet accessibility initiatives established in 1998 to ensure all websites be made as accessible to individuals with disabilities – such as impaired vision or hearing, or inability to use a mouse – as those without them.

In May 2013, the Bureau of Internet Accessibility incorporated as Accessibility Now, and after participating in Betaspring’s 12-week accelerator program in fall 2013, the company is now beginning to roll out its automated scanning service, which helps companies ensure compliance with U.S. Section 508 amendment to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Founder and CEO Mark Shapiro will join the Providence Geeks on Wednesday to tell the Accessibility Now story, demonstrate the website-scanning platform and talk about where his company is headed next.

The January meetup will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the AS220 in Providence. The event is free, but attendees buy their own food and drink.
