It takes a certain kind of person to embrace the challenges of public accounting. The travel from engagements can be brutal. Or as Jessica Grey said in her 40 Under Forty application, “the balance between my work life and my home life was nonexistent.”

So when she joined GTECH Corp. in 2004 as a financial analyst, it wasn’t just a job change. It opened up a whole new world, both professionally as well as personally.

Grey has been on an upward path from almost the moment she started at the gaming-technology giant. Her first assignment – this time with travel to Antigua, perhaps not such a bad thing – yielded her a “Building Excellence Gold Award” from the company, its second-highest honor, she says.

From that engagement, Grey went on to join the company’s Latin America group, leading to travel across the region, as well as giving her the opportunity to develop business-evaluation analyses for new business in Colombia, which in turn led her to be given the role of manager and then director of finance for the company’s Western United States region. In more than four years in that role, Grey has helped GTECH gain contract wins and extensions worth more than $1.2 billion.

As busy as she has been, however, the 33-year-old Grey has been able to establish that balance she craved years ago. Last year, she had a son. She plays in an adult soccer league and has coached young girls through the years as well (she was co-captain of Holy Cross’ soccer team while an undergraduate). And she volunteers as an accountant with 4 Paws Inc., a nonprofit shelter devoted to preventing cruelty to animals.

All in all, she has traveled quite a ways from her career beginnings. •
