Job Lot, customers tackle hunger

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Through Dec. 31, Ocean State Job Lot and its customers are participating in a fundraising drive to combat hunger in the Northeast, and in Rhode Island.
The retailer has invited customers at each of its 115 stores in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New York and New Jersey, to donate $1 at the checkout counter.
The annual fundraiser, in which the company matches the first $100,000 in donations made by consumers, is in its 12th year. All money raised goes to the Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation’s “Three Square Meals” family meal assistance program. Food banks in the region are expected to benefit through that program.
Headquartered here, the retailer has 16 stores in Rhode Island.
Last holiday season, the company raised a record $1.4 million for “Three Square Meals” which resulted in Job Lot donating 109 tractor-trailer loads of food (a $4.2 million value) to select food banks in 2014, serving about 1.2 million people.
Through the Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation, the company also supports charities and causes including but not limited to veterans, disaster relief efforts, the performing arts, special needs children, foster children, and educational institutions and activities.
