Jobless rate falls in Prov. metro in May

PROVIDENCE – Jobless rates were lower in May than a year earlier in 346 of the 387 metropolitan areas, including in the Providence-Warwick metropolitan area, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The jobless rate was 5.6 percent in May in the Providence metro, compared with 7.5 percent a year ago.

But the regional jobless rate was higher than the national unemployment rate in May of 5.3 percent, not seasonally adjusted, which dropped from 6.1 percent a year earlier.

Lincoln, Neb., had the lowest unemployment rate in May at 2.2 percent, while Yuma, Ariz., had the highest unemployment rate at 23.1 percent.

In May, 319 metropolitan areas had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment, 63 had decreases, and five had no change. The Providence metro area was among those that had increases, as nonfarm payroll employment grew 1.8 percent, or by 10,200 jobs, to 583,400.

The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, Calif.(+151,200). The largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Provo-Orem, Utah (+6.7 percent).

The largest over-the-year decrease in employment occurred in Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula, Miss. (-3,200). The largest over-the-year percentage decrease in employment occurred in Pine Bluff, Ark. (-4.7 percent).
