Jobless rate falls in Spindle City

FALL RIVER – The city’s unemployment rate dropped again in May, to 6.2 percent, down from 7 percent in April and a reduction from 9.5 percent in January.

With the reduction, Fall River is tied for eighth-highest unemployment in the state. Both New Bedford and North Adams recorded unemployment rates of 6.2 percent, The Herald News reported.

Of the cities in the state, both Lawrence and Springfield recorded unemployment higher than Fall River. The unemployment rate in Lawrence was 7.2 percent for May; in Springfield it was 7.1 percent.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Massachusetts was 4.2 percent in May. In Rhode Island it was 5.4 percent. •
