PROVIDENCE – Unemployment rates were lower than a year ago in September in 224 out of 387 metropolitan areas, including the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area, which saw the rate fall to 4.8 percent from 5.2 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said this week.
Rates, which are not seasonally adjusted, were higher over the year in 141 areas and unchanged in another 22, the BLS said.
The Providence metro unemployment rate, along with 12 other metro areas, matched that of the nation in September.
Sioux Falls, S.D., had the lowest unemployment rate in September at 2 percent, while El Centro, Calif., had the highest unemployment rates at 22.7 percent.

The civilian labor force grew to 680,730 in the Providence metro in September from 677,744 in September 2015, and the number of unemployed dropped to 32,921 from 35,466 over the same period.

In September, 315 metropolitan areas had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment, including the Providence metro, which had a 7,700 increase, or 1.3 percent, to 588,600 from 580,900. Another 65 metro areas had decreases, and seven had no change. The largest over-the-year employment increase occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, N.Y.-N.J.-Pa., at 169,400, while the largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Ann Arbor, Mich., at 6.6 percent.

The largest over-the-year decrease in employment occurred in Lafayette, La., which experienced a 7,200 employment drop, and the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in employment was 5.3 percent in Casper, Wyo.
