PROVIDENCE – Joseph R. Paolino, father of former Providence Mayor Joseph R. Paolina Jr., died at 83 after a long illness, the family announced Wednesday.
Paolino, a lifelong resident of Providence, was extremely active in the Rhode Island real estate market. He started working in the family real estate business in 1946 at 17. During the 1960s, Paolino managed the Crescent Park Amusement Park while investing in and managing commercial and residential real estate in Providence.
From his experience, he founded Paolino Properties, of which he was the president. According to a release from the family, Paolino was “well known for being a major investor and developer for over 50 years in Providence, the city he loved.”
“Mr. Paolino was the patriarch of his family, a legendary businessman and entrepreneur in the state of Rhode Island, and a truly great man,” said the family in a release announcing his death.
Paolino was the original incorporator and former director of First Bank & Trust, former director of Columbus National Bank and Certified Corporation. He served on the board of advisers of the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Bank and was involved with the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Providence Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
Details of the funeral were not readily available.
