PROVIDENCE – The Providence Journal has named David J. Butler its executive editor and senior vice president of news and audience development, according to a story posted to the news organization’s website.
Butler succeeds Karen A. Bordeleau, who retired early in September, and will start his new duties Nov. 9. Most recently executive vice president and editor-in-chief of Digital First Media, a publishing group that includes 75 daily newspapers, Butler has served as newsroom chief for a number of other publications, including the Detroit News, the Los Angeles Daily News and the New Haven Register.
In making the announcement, Journal President and Publisher Janet Hasson said “It’s no secret that newsrooms across the country are challenged to keep up with the fast-paced world of social media and evolving reader platforms, but one thing remains constant. A statewide newspaper and website such as The Journal can play a critical role in providing Rhode Island residents useful information and thought-provoking journalism. I am confident Dave will provide that leadership in The Journal newsroom to meet our changing environment.”
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead The Journal and its talented news staff to the next level of excellence as our industry adapts to an exciting digital world,” said Butler in prepared remarks. “I hope to offer some fresh ideas from Silicon Valley and from my years overseeing scores of newspapers and Web sites across the country as I also learn much from The Journal staff and its readers.”
