T.F. GREEN CONTINUES TO RUN BEHIND 2013 airline passenger traffic, according to the latest R.I. Airport Corporation report, even as more cargo is shipped into and out of the state's largest airport.

WARWICK – Keeping its streak of year-over-year passenger traffic declines intact, T.F. Green Airport posted a 3 percent drop in July, as 346,416 people traveled to and from the state’s largest airport. It marked the seventh consecutive month that Green had recorded a drop in passenger traffic, according to the latest report released by the R.I. Airport Corporation.

In fact, for the year, T.F. Green has a 6.2 percent deficit on 2013 traffic, as 2.1 million people have either enplaned or deplaned there, compared with 2.2 million in the first seven months of last year.

At the same time, Green continued to report increases in cargo traffic, posting a 10.4 percent increase in mail and freight shipped to and from the airport, for a total of 2.4 million lbs. For the year Green has grown freight shipments 4.3 percent to 14.8 million lbs.

United Airlines bucked the trend in July, registering a 13.3 percent year-over-year increase in traffic to 43,976. Among the other major carriers, US Airways posted a 7 percent decline to 73,400, Southwest Airlines saw a 5.4 percent drop to 156,218 passengers, JetBlue Airways traffic fell 4 percent to 23,455 and Delta Airlines saw its passenger number essentially flat at 46,860.

The largest cargo carrier in July was Federal Express, with 1.2 million lbs. of mail and freight moved to and from Rhode Island. United Parcel Service registered 829,737 lbs. of cargo, with Wiggins Airways posting a total of 265,547 lbs. of cargo in July. Passenger airlines that also carried cargo included Southwest (83,651 lbs.), Delta (15,785), US Airways (7,137) and JetBlue (808 lbs.).
