KVH holds 16% of VSAT market

MIDDLETOWN – The mini-VSAT broadband service from KVH Industries Inc. is the most popular maritime VSAT network in the world, according to a report from international research and analysis firm Euroconsult.

At the end of 2011, KVH’s mini-VSAT broadband service accounted for 16 percent of the VSAT terminal market, which includes roughly 9,000 active maritime VSAT terminals.

A VSAT – very-small-aperture terminals – is a two-way satellite ground station or stabilized maritime antenna with a dish antenna that is smaller than 3 meters.

KVH’s market share was 20 percent higher than the next closest competitor, according to the Euroconsult report.

“Our strategy from the launch of the mini-VSAT Broadband service four and a half years ago has been to create a single global satellite communications network that delivers very fast, very high quality, reasonably priced broadband service to all types of vessels,” said Martin Kits van Heyningen, KVH’s CEO in prepared remarks.

The Middletown-based technological communications company reported a 60 percent growth in VSAT revenues in 2011.

Euroconsult estimated that by year-end 2021, maritime VSAT services will account for 55 percent of the $1.7 billion maritime communications market.
