KVH releases Videotel Zika safety video

MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries Inc. has released Videotel’s new Zika virus safety and training video free of charge to all mariners worldwide.

KVH is a provider of in-motion satellite TV and communications systems for vessels, vehicles and aircraft for the maritime, retail and leisure industries.

The goal is to increase awareness of preventive measures that can protect seafarers and their colleagues and families against disease. It is important that seafarers take precautions against the further spread of disease, especially given the global nature of the maritime industry, the company said.

The World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a public health emergency earlier this year. The virus is a mosquito-borne illness that is linked to birth defects. There is no medicine or vaccine for the Zika virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

KVH, aided by seafarer agencies such as the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network, multicasts the training video to its IP-MobileCast customers on vessels around the world. Customers will receive the video automatically for immediate, onboard viewing. The video explains the nature of the Zika virus, steps to avoid infection and the importance of pest management on seafaring vessels in order to avoid passive transportation of virus-infected mosquitoes.

The program also includes a website for downloading the safety video for free, an accompanying workbook, emails and a social media campaign.
