KVH’s Ebola safety video drawing worldwide interest

MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries has seen interest from ship managers, seafarers and health officials from more than 100 counties in response to its recently released 15-minute video about Ebola safety.
Jill Connors, media and communications manager, said the free video has been downloaded approximately 1,000 times in just the two weeks it has been available. She said there have been nearly 5,000 unique visitors to the company’s Ebola safety video landing pages.
In the past, KVH did not offer safety training videos for free, but the acquisition of Videotel, which produces maritime training videos, this past summer helped changed that, she said.

To date, there is no known case of Ebola, a rare and deadly disease, being spread by ship. But, as Connors wrote on her blog for KVH, seafarers and dockworkers are still concerned. She highlighted recent news reports that stated a longshoremen’s union in Maryland would not work on a ship from West Africa, and how a ship was quarantined in Durban, South Africa, on fears of it carrying Ebola.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa.
KVH created a website, www.kvh.com/EbolaSafety, for all mariners to download the free video and an accompanying workbook.
Videotel, a KVH company, produced the video in conjunction with Steamship Mutual P&I Club and a panel of medical experts.
