Karen Southern has been named leader of the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting’s communication efforts. Southern, a former journalist and communication strategist, previously worked as a press secretary for former Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline. She will help promote the institute’s science-training workshops for journalists and strengthen the organization’s social media presence. •
