Kent County reading groups raise $2,800

COVENTRY – Literacy Volunteers of Kent County Inc. and the Coventry Library Foundation jointly raised $2,800 at a Sept. 20 fundraiser, Red vs. White: A Night to Celebrate Local Flavor! at ShelaLara Vineyards and Winery.
The two organizations will share the proceeds, said Kathy Gray, program director for the literacy group. Walgreens participated as a sponsor and more than 100 people attended, she said.
Literacy Volunteers is an accredited nonprofit affiliate of ProLiteracy, Inc. The organization trains volunteers to tutor adults whose limited English literacy skills prevent them from functioning effectively in their homes, workplaces, communities, or as citizens of the United States. Tutoring is free, confidential, and is typically done on a one-to-one basis.
The nonprofit library foundation, established in 2001, aims to fund the eventual expansion of the Coventry Public Library building.
