Kent first to offer surgical robotics gallbladder removal

WARWICK – Kent Hospital has become the first in the state to offer a program for the robotic, minimally invasive removal of gallbladders.
“Surgical robotics provides patients a less invasive surgical procedure, meaning a quicker recovery time and the advantage of getting back to normal activity sooner,” said Sandra L. Coletta, president and CEO of Kent Hospital.
The robotics system allows surgeons to operate through a minimally invasive manner, either through a single site or a few small incisions. The surgeon is provided a magnified 3D high-definition viewing system which can be enhanced by Firefly, a near-infrared technology that illuminates the surgical site. Through tiny, jointed instruments with far greater range of motion than the human wrist, the surgeon has enhanced vision, precision and control.
“The surgeon is 100 percent in control of the system,” said Dr. Joseph Brady, general surgeon at Kent Hospital, “which translates hand movements into smaller and more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the body.” •
