Kent launches new sports medicine program

WARWICK – Athletes and other active individuals seeking a holistic approach to sports medicine can now find treatment at Kent Hospital’s newest outpatient physician practice, Affinity Sports Medicine.

The practice will be directed by Jeffrey Manning, a primary care sports medicine physician who is also a faculty member at the Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University and the University of Massachusetts. Manning said that he examines athletes from “360 degrees” – treating concussions, sprains, stress fractures and nutritional problems – and collaborates with orthopedic surgeons when operations are necessary.

Manning said that previous to the addition of Affinity Sports Medicine, Kent did not have any primary care sports medicine physicians on staff. He said that Care New England, the network of hospitals including Kent, is looking to invest more in primary care and its offshoots, such as primary care sports medicine.

“We welcome Dr. Manning and Affinity Sports Medicine to Kent Hospital and the community. The services and expertise he brings fill an important void,” said Norm Kornwitz, an orthopedic surgeon with Kent Hospital’s surgical orthopedic group, West Bay Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery, in a press release. “The care he provides, paired with advanced orthopedic specialists, creates a comprehensive approach for treating athletes and anyone who leads an active lifestyle,” he continued.

Before attending medical school, Manning was a high school teacher and football and lacrosse coach. He continues to work with schools, including Exeter West Greenwich High School, providing care to the football team during games and offering follow-up treatment.
