WARWICK – After receiving state approval earlier this year to move forward with such procedures, Kent Hospital recently successfully completed its first elective coronary angioplasty.

The hospital received approval to perform both elective and emergency angioplasties. Angioplasty is a procedure opening blocked arteries in the heart by inflating a balloon and placing a stent in a compromised artery.

“The successful launch of our elective angioplasty program represents another critical step in providing the community and patients with the best possible care close to home,” said Dr. Charlie M. Hedgepeth, chief of cardiology at Kent, a Care New England hospital.

Dr. Ed Thomas and Dr. Ashish Shah performed the procedure, supported by a team of highly trained nurses, technicians and clinical support staff.
