Killian named chair of PC board

PROVIDENCE – Providence College has announced its board of trustees has elected former Verizon Communications executive John Killian as chairman, succeeding Michael Ruane.
“I am thrilled to assume the chairmanship of this great institution and look forward to working with [PC President] Father Shanley, the administration and our faculty to continue to provide a great educational experience for our students,” Killian said in a statement.
Killian, who graduated from the college in 1977, has been a board of trustees member since 2004. Killian formerly served as chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc. until his retirement in 2010.
Killian previously worked at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., in Providence, AT&T and NYNEX where in 1995 he was appointed CEO of NYNEX CableComms Limited in the United Kingdom.
In 1997, following the merger of Bell Atlantic/NYNEX, he was group president of international telecommunications for Bell Atlantic, then vice president of investor relations, and after Bell Atlantic merged with GTE in 2000, senior vice president of customer operations for Verizon’s National Operations Group. He became president of Verizon Business in 2005.
Killian is a Torchbearer of PC’s 1917 Society and has served as Trustee of the National Urban League, College of Rochelle, and is a director and trustee of Con Edison in New York and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in Boston.
“John has been a dedicated and committed board member…and I look forward to working closely with him in his new role as board chair,” Shanley said in a statement.
The board of trustees also elected Christopher Reilly, class of 1984, as vice chairman and Maureen Corcoran, class of 1979, as secretary.
