Kilmartin, MADD call on store to remove shirts

PROVIDENCE – Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin and MADD-Rhode Island Executive Director Gabrielle Abbate last month called on the Providence Urban Outfitters store to remove “provocative” T-shirts glorifying underage drinking from shelves.
The clothing chain Urban Outfitters, which has a location on Thayer Street, is promoting a line of T-shirts emblazoned with slogans such as “I Vote For Vodka” and “I Drink You’re Cute.” Kilmartin and MADD said in a press release last month the shirts “make light of the serious and dangerous situation of underage drinking.”
Urban Outfitters’ target demographics are young adults, with its largest demographic of customers between the ages of 18 and 24 and the second-largest younger than 18.
According to the National Institutes of Health, 39 percent of current eighth graders, 58 percent of 10th graders, 72 percent of 12th graders and 85 percent of college students have tried alcohol. &#8226
