Kilmartin announces increase for Rhode Island Naloxone rebate program

PROVIDENCE – Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced an amended agreement with Naloxone manufacturer Amphastar Pharmaceuticals Inc. that would increase the company-offered rebate for each Naloxone syringe dosage kit purchased by nonfederal government agencies in Rhode Island from $4 per dose to $6 per dose. The rebate is retroactive for purchases made on or after Oct. 1, 2015. Sold under brand names, including Narcan, Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose when administered promptly.

State agencies, municipal governments, state and municipal law enforcement agencies, emergency medical service agencies or nonprofit community-based programs, among others, are entities eligible to seek rebates from the attorney general’s office. Since the October 2015 launch of the rebate program in Rhode Island, the office has received fewer than two dozen rebate requests in total from the Cumberland and Pawtucket school departments and The Compass School, a charter school in South Kingstown.

“I am grateful that Amphastar continues to work with my office to help offset the cost of this life-saving drug for the state, municipalities and community organizations,” said Kilmartin. “I strongly encourage all eligible entities to take advantage of this rebate program. Further, I look forward to working with Gov. [Gina M.] Raimondo and the General Assembly on how to maximize the proposed $40,000 in funding for the purchase of Naloxone through this program.”

Raimondo has proposed an allocation of funds to purchase Naloxone to be used by the Rhode Island State Police and local police departments. Those purchases would be eligible for rebates under this program, which has no ceiling, according to a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office.
