When did your interest in hospitality and events start?
My mom is the master of Southern hospitality, and I grew up in a house where food really brought people together. I started working in the industry at 15, hosting birthday parties at United Skates of America. After that, I worked as a server and event planner for several places in Rhode Island, while getting my music degree at URI.
What are some of your plans as you move into your new role?
Right now, I’m planning the Eat Drink RI Festival, April 30-May 3, and I’m really excited about that. The festival has grown so much over the past four years, and we have a lot to celebrate. Moving forward, [Eat Drink RI creator David Dadekian] and I are focusing on the Eat Drink RI Central Market, a complete business-to-business and business-to-consumer center for all residents of the state, as well as being a destination for visitors to Rhode Island.
Do you have any tips for making an event stand out?
Whenever possible, send hand-addressed paper invitations. There’s nothing like knowing a host took the extra time to do that. Explore nontraditional venues. Especially in Rhode Island, a state so rich in culture and history, there are lots of spaces to host unique events. Don’t skimp on the marketing and promotional design. A beautiful invitation, eye-catching logo, or a great website always make a memorable impression. •
