Armand E. Sabitoni has been honored with the 2011 Richard M. Oster Gold Heart Award by the American Heart Association. Sabitoni is currently general secretary-treasurer and New England regional manager for the Laborers’ International Union of North America. PBN: What are some of your responsibilities as general secretary-treasurer and New England regional manager of the LIUNA?

SABITONI: As general secretary-treasurer of LIUNA, I oversee the day-to-day activities, the budgets and the overall operation of the International Union. I am responsible to the members for making sure that their local union’s per capita tax is spent appropriately and in accordance with our constitution. My regional duties require me to oversee all of the LIUNA district councils and local unions within the New England region. I also sit on numerous boards and commissions relative to my position.

PBN: Can you tell us about your additional involvements in professional organizations?

SABITONI: Throughout my years as a labor leader, I have been most fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with a number of organizations – like the American Heart Association – that do extraordinary work in our communities. I have also been honored to serve with my wife, Linda, on the board of governors of Rhode Island Hospital. One of my favorite projects has been a charter school for students who wish to explore the world of work. I am very proud to have been a co-founder of the New England Laborers’/Cranston Public Schools Construction & Career Academy.

PBN: Are there any specific issues in the areas of health, safety, labor-management cooperation or training that you are currently focusing on?

SABITONI: Today there are numerous issues we have to focus on due to the difficult economy. With regard to health and safety on the job as well as skills enhancement, we are running an unprecedented number of classes at our training funds, which are available to all members of LIUNA. These classes help our members upgrade their present skills, learn new skills within the Laborers’ jurisdiction and keep up to date with new trends in the industry. Our classes are determined by industry need and by employer request. •
