Langevin introduces care provision extension

WASHINGTON – Partnering with his Republican co-chair of the House Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus, U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin recently introduced the Lifespan Respite Care Act of 2015. The act would extend the Lifespan Respite Care Act of 2006 at $15 million annually for five years in order to provide funds to family caregivers working to help keep loved ones in their own homes.

“Family caregivers perform demanding tasks that allow their loved ones to live at home where they are most comfortable,” Langevin said. “While the benefits of this type of family caregiving are plentiful, it can take an emotional, mental and physical toll.”

Forty-three million family caregivers provide an estimated $470 billion in uncompensated care in the United States each year, more than the total Medicaid spending in 2013.
