PROVIDENCE – The state Department of Transportation will be the latest state agency with new leadership. Peter Alviti Jr. will be nominated as the new department director, Gov. Gina M. Raimondo announced Tuesday. She will submit his name to replace director Michael P. Lewis, who will resign from his post as of Feb. 27, once the state Senate returns from winter break.

After serving as state DOT director for six years, Lewis informed Raimondo that he was “ready to explore new opportunities,” Raimondo said, in a release.

Alviti previously has served as director of public works for Cranston. He most recently was director of programs for the Laborers International Union of North America – New England Laborer’s Health and Safety Fund. He has a bachelor’s degree in construction technology from Roger Williams University and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Northeastern University.

Raimondo also announced that Peter Garino has begun work as deputy director of the department. Garino came to Rhode Island from the New Jersey Transit system, the third-largest transit agency in the United States. He was chief of capital programming and administration for the agency from 2003 until his appointment in Rhode Island. Garino has a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University.
