LITTLE COMPTON – Quaint Little Compton, in Newport County, has been named the cutest Rhode Island town and top vacation spot in the state, according to two lists compiled by New York-based women’s lifestyle website PureWow.

The website chose Little Compton as the cutest Rhode Island town for its privacy, saying: “A small town in the country’s smallest state, Little Compton feels worlds away from nearby Newport and Narragansett. But despite being virtually secluded, you’re never more than a few minutes from the beach.”

PureWow cited Little Compton’s shopping, farms and Sakonnet Vineyards as evidence for setting it apart from other vacation hotspots in Rhode Island and called the town one of the Ocean State’s “best kept secrets.”

The small beach town, featuring 57 historic cemeteries according to the town’s website, is a bastion of the Ocean State’s revolutionary history. The community is home to the Little Compton Historical Society, a nonprofit which preserves the history of the town reaching back to pre-colonial New England.

Boasting a population of just over 3,400 at the 2010 census, the town is run by a town council, which is currently overseen by Robert L. Mushen, president.

Sailing mecca Marblehead was named the cutest town in Massachusetts, while Cape Cod was named the top vacation spot.
