Lobster trapping up close

Curious about how the lobster gets from the ocean floor to the plate? A new business in Newport gives city visitors a hands-on demonstration of lobster trapping, explaining how they are caught, and adds the option of a steamed dinner at the end of the tour.

Fish’n Tales Adventures, owned by Jeff O’Brien, began operating in July. It is a sister business to Gansett Cruises, a company that offers longer tours of Newport Harbor.

The lobster-boat excursions take a 90-minute trip around Narragansett Bay, and include an informational component on lobsters.

The captain and crew will haul out five to six traps, while passengers help with banding the lobster claws, sort the catch and identify which crustaceans are too small and need to be thrown back.

The company has a relationship with Aquidneck Lobster Company that will allow passengers to end their trip with a fresh, steamed lobster dinner.

The company’s vessel, the F/V Northeastern, will operate from May through November and docks at Bowen’s Wharf. •
