PROVIDENCE – Local 1 percent hotel tax collections climbed year over year in April, as well as on a fiscal-year-to-date basis, by 5.9 percent and 13.8 percent, respectively, the state Department of Revenue said Thursday.

The local 1 percent hotel tax is collected on the rental of rooms in the state and remitted, in full, to the municipality in which the room rental was located.

Collections totaled $234,888 in April compared with $221,766 in April 2015, while they reached $3,075,494 in the first 10 months of the fiscal year, compared with $2,702,156 during the same fiscal period a year ago.

Director of Revenue Robert S. Hull described the year-over-year increase in local 1 percent hotel tax collections in April as “modest” and “significantly below” the 21.4 percent year-over-year increase posted in April 2015, despite an additional $9,305 in receipts received in April 2016 from the local 1 percent hotel tax base expansion.
However, fiscal year to date 1 percent hotel tax collections were 5.1 percentage points higher when compared with the 2014-2015 corresponding fiscal periods.
