Local coffee roaster now employee owned

MIDDLETOWN – Custom House Coffee is now owned by 14 of its employees, the company announced Feb. 6. Founder Robert Mastin began selling shares of his stock this year to employees who want to become owners of the 15-year-old coffeehouse and wholesale roasting operation.

Mastin, in his mid-60s, wants to gradually turn over the company to his staff, selling shares over time, to allow for a smooth transition in the management of the company.

“This is a good way to slowly scale back and turn over more and more responsibility to the new owners, at a pace that works for all of us,” he said in a statement.

Only active employees are eligible to purchase and own stock, and there is a formula based on the time worked at the company that determines how many shares of stock can be purchased at a time. •
