Local companies make Newsweek top 500 green companies list for world, U.S.

PROVIDENCE – CVS Health Corp., National Grid, UnitedHealth Group and Schneider Electric all made Newsweek’s list of the top 500 green companies in the world.

The list, compiled in partnership with Corporate Knights Capital and HIP Investor Inc., ranks the world’s largest publicly-traded corporations on corporate sustainability and environmental impact.

The magazine also listed the top 500 publicly-traded green companies in the United States.

In the world rankings, UnitedHealth Group ranked 17th, while on the U.S. list, it held the 11th spot.

Woonsocket-based CVS Health, which was 22nd in the world rankings, was 16th on the U.S. list.

Schneider Electric, which has operations in the West Kingston section of South Kingstown, was 25th in the world.

National Grid placed 29th in the world. Steve Holliday, the company’s chief executive, said in a statement, “We are committed to being an innovative leader in connecting people to the energy they use and to safeguarding our global environment for future generations. This ranking validates that we are on the right track.”

Other rankings for local companies and other companies with significant local operations are as follows:

  • Amgen Inc.: 34th for world, 21st for U.S.
  • Eaton Corp.: 119th for world, 67th for U.S.
  • Verizon: 182nd for world, 116th for U.S.
  • Honeywell International Inc.: 314th for world, 220th for U.S.
  • General Growth Properties: 392nd for world; 324th for U.S.
  • Textron Inc.: 203rd for U.S.
