Local developer to buy Durfee Tech building

FALL RIVER – Local developer Alan Macomber plans to buy the Durfee Tech building and develop it for apartments and artist lofts, The Herald News reported Dec. 30.

Macomber hopes to make it an artist community and plans to have 40 apartments and 20 live-work studios.

The building, at 64 Durfee St., was built in 1904 and dedicated as the Bradford Durfee Textile School. It was renamed the Bradford Durfee Technical Institute in 1946. It has been vacant for 15 years, after Bristol Community College stopped using it for classes.

Macomber said he is still constructing a financial package. It will include applications for historic tax credits and credits for work in Gateway Cities.

Design work will start once the sale closes, Macomber said, adding he hopes to have the building ready by December 2018. •
