Local groups receive grants to help homeless veterans

WASHINGTON - Two area nonprofit organizations received grant money from the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service Homeless Female Veterans and Veterans with Families program, the labor department announced on Monday.

Operation Stand Down Rhode and Island and Veterans Inc. received $210,000 and $120,000 respectively.

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island assists Ocean State veterans achieve housing stability by providing transitional and permanent housing, job training and other support services.

Veterans Inc., headquartered in Worcester, Mass. is the largest source of services to New England veterans.

“These grants will offer the opportunity for a better life, providing the training and skills needed to find a job and housing,” Secretary of Labor Tom Perez said in a statement. “Our veterans have sacrificed for our nation, and job training programs offer them a path to participation in society and success in the workplace.”

The grants received by the two organizations are two of the 22 grants awarded through the program to various veteran support organizations across the country. The grants total more than $5 million and are intended to help state and local organizations provide housing assistance, career counseling, financial management mentoring, as well as other services, to veterans. It is estimated that the grants will assist around 1,900 veterans nationally.
