Posted:

WASHINGTON – Three local news outlets – WJAR-TV NBC 10; WLNE-TV ABC 6; and Rhode Island Public Radio – were honored by the Radio Television Digital News Association in the 2013 Regional Murrow Awards.

Since 1971, the news association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism for the country’s 14 regions. According to the RTDNA website, award recipients “demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.”

Awards were given for small market radio, large market radio, small market television and large market television in the following categories: overall excellence, newscast, breaking news continuing coverage, feature reporting, investigative reporting, news documentary, news series, reporting: hard news, reporting: sports, use of sound/video, writing and website.

In region 10 – which comprises Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont – WJAR-TV earned three awards, Rhode Island Public Radio earned two and WLNE-TV rounded out Rhode Island’s awardees with one distinction.

WJAR’s NBC 10 News was recognized for “Overall Excellence” in small market television. The news outlet also was recognized for its continuing coverage of the 38 Studios collapse and in the investigative reporting category for its in-depth coverage of school fire inspections.

Also in the small market television segment, WLNE-TV earned a Murrow in the “News Series” category for its three-part series “Medical Missionaries.” The series covered a group of doctors, nurses and other volunteers acting as medical missionaries in the United States to treat the uninsured or underinsured.

Rhode Island Public Radio earned two awards: for large market radio in the “News Series” and “Reporting: Hard News” categories.

RIPR was recognized for its “Future Docs” news series, a radio and online documentary project that followed the experiences of medical students and residents as they become doctors. In the “Reporting: Hard News” category, the state’s public radio station was recognized for its report “Home Births in RI.”
