Lt. Jim Pagano Foundation awards $27K in grants

CRANSTON – A total of $27,000 in grants was awarded by the Lt. Jim Pagano Foundation to individuals and programs supporting character development, including youth sports organizations, over the first half of 2016, the organization announced in July.

Lisa Pagano, president of the foundation, said of the foundation’s namesake: “Everyone who knew Jim knew of his love for good sportsmanship and the joy of healthy competition as functions of important character building, and we are thrilled to award these grants to our Cranston sports community in his memory.”

Among those grants awarded by the foundation so far this year are $2,500 for hardship scholarships and new safety helmets for the Cranston League for Cranston’s Future football and cheerleading program; $5,000 for CLCF Girls Athletic League for Sport Softball Program for new pitching machines, batting T’s, home plates, pitching rubbers, bases and a Sliderite Schutt for teaching proper slide technique; and $5,000 to Cranston Western Little League for the installation of a new lighting system at Richard D. Santamaria Field.

Additionally, earmarked for disbursement are two grants for programs currently in development, a Cranston High School West freshman basketball program ($5,000) and the YMCA flag football program ($2,500).

The foundation also awarded five $1,500 scholarships to Cranston seniors David Cushman, Noah James, Thea Vargas, Gabrielle Johnson and Bryanna Melo, graduating from Cranston High School West, Cranston High School East and NEL-CPS Construction & Career Academy.
