PROVIDENCE – Providence Schools Superintendent Susan F. Lusi announced Friday she will resign at the end of the school year, according to Mayor Jorge O. Elorza’s office. A search for a replacement will begin immediately.
The daily operations of the Providence schools, the state’s largest public school system, will continue without disruption, Elorza said in the statement.
“I thank Dr. Lusi for her dedicated service to our city as Providence Schools superintendent,” he said. “I understand personally the crucial difference that a good education can make in a child’s life, and I am committed to finding a dynamic leader for our school district who is worthy of continuing the progress made during Dr. Lusi’s tenure and who shares my vision for raising academic achievement in every school, engaging our community and reforming the role of central administration to create a school department that just works for students and families.”
Lusi was superintendent for the past four years. In that time, the district’s graduation rates have improved to 71 percent of students, drop-out rates have declined to 14 percent, and reading scores have improved at selected grade levels, according to the mayor’s office.
