PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island commuters who use the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail will see a $2 roundtrip increase in the daily fare, under a series of system-wide increases expected to take effect July 1.
The one-way fare into Boston for Zone 8, which includes Providence Station on the Providence-Stoughton commuter rail line, will increase by $1 to $11.50. The monthly pass will rise by $33 to $363, according to the schedule published on the MBTA website.
The one-way fare for Zone 9, which includes the T.F. Green Airport stop, will rise $1 to $12. The monthly pass will increase $34.50 to $379.50.
In Zone 10, which includes the Wickford Junction Station, the one-way trip will cost $12.50. A monthly pass will increase $36.25 to $398.25.
The network of fare increases across the MBTA system will provide the service with increased revenue of $43 million. The funds will be placed in a dedicated account for capital improvements, according to the authority. The MBTA approved the new fares in a meeting Monday, according to a news release posted on its website.
Once they take effect, the new fares will be in effect for two and a half years, according to the authority.
In other changes, the standard CharlieCard fare, which is used on subway lines, will rise 15 cents to $2.25 a trip. Individual trips on the T, using disposable CharlieTickets, will rise 10 cents to $2.75.
Local bus fares, paid in cash on board, will drop 10 cents to $2. Holders of the CharlieCard used on buses will pay a reduced fare as well, at $1.70 a trip.
