WARWICK – Commuter rail service to the new intermodal facility at T.F. Green Airport will start Dec. 6, the R.I. Department of Transportation and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said Tuesday.
Trains will make six stops Monday through Friday on the Providence/Stoughton line. No stops are planned for weekends.
“Expanded commuter rail in Rhode Island is just two weeks away,” RIDOT Director Michael Lewis said. “This service gives enhanced options to get to your office or T.F. Green Airport or wherever your final destination is.”
The DOT said that ticket fares will vary by distance traveled. Travel between T.F. Green and Providence will costs $2.25 each way. Travel between T .F. Green and Boston costs $8.25 each way. Seniors and people with disabilities receive 50 percent off and children 11 and younger are free when accompanied by a paying adult.
The trains will run along the MBTA’s commuter line that stretches from Boston’s South Station and now ends at the Providence train station. The end of the line will become the T.F. Green facility dubbed Interlink.
The $267 million Interlink, which officially opened Oct. 27, also contains a commuter parking garage as well as offices and facilities for car rental companies. It is connected to the airport terminal via a glass sky bridge spanning Post Road in Warwick.
“The announcement of the expanded MBTA service marks the completion of the InterLink project, and the commencement of a new era of convenience and efficiency in transportation,” Gov. Donald L. Carcieri said.
Separately, the state is planning to bring MBTA service farther south with a new station at Wickford Junction in North Kingstown. That station is scheduled to open in late 2011.
