MIDDLETOWN – MIKEL Inc., a woman-owned, military technology support company, won two government contracts totaling $35.7 million for work with Newport’s Naval Undersea Warfare Center, according to separate announcements by the company on Tuesday.

The first, a five-year, $26 million government contract was awarded to the company to support the NUWC’s Code 15 Sensors and Sonar Systems department. Code 15 is the research and development of sonar used on the Navy’s submarine and surface combat fleet. MIKEL will be involved in electrical, mechanical, ocean, system and computer engineering as well as computer science, physics and logistic work pertaining to Code 15.

Kelly Mendell, MIKEL president, said the company’s “innovative approach” to sonar research and development helped it land the government contract.

The second contract, also for five years, awarded $9.7 million to MIKEL to provide operational, technical and engineering support services to the Combat Systems Department systems and laboratories at NUWC. This will include support of the Code 25 Infrastructure Support and Media Center group and the Advanced Interactive Management Technology Center, the latter provides the Navy and its support agencies and contractors with an interactive, web-based data retrieval system and displays submarine warfare systems configuration, logistics, alteration, planning and system engineering data.

In 2013, MIKEL won a similar contract over a company that had held previous contracts on this work for more than two decades.

Mendell said of the new achievement: “MIKEL won this new contract as a result of our past performance and our company’s everyday initiative to perform at a high level to ensure our customer’s expectations are exceeded.”

Founded in 1999, MIKEL provides Undersea Warfare Solutions and Services for the Department of Defense.
