MIT students visit IYRS School for composites seminar

Posted 1/29/14

BRISTOL – The IYRS School of Technology and Trades hosted architecture students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Jan. 15-17 for a seminar on composites technology designed to enhance students’ theoretical understanding of composites and promote environmentally friendly materials in modern architecture.

IYRS faculty and students, together with by Mark Goulthorpe, an associate professor of architecture at MIT, instructed the MIT students in the creation of composite materials, before allowing the students to perform the process themselves through a vacuum infusion process which pulls resin through the materials. After students had a chance to construct composite materials, they discussed the current application of the materials in modern architecture.

The IYRS School of Technology and Trades, an experiential school dedicated to teaching technical and craft-oriented building skills, plans to run future seminars with MIT on composites technology.

IYRS is comprised of three ACCSC accredited schools: School of Boatbuilding & Restoration, School of Marine Systems and School of Composites Technology with campuses in Newport and Bristol.
